A New Start for Your Child!

The start of a new school year is also symbolic of a fresh new start for many children! If you have a child that’s entering the second or third grade, it could be time to start their journey to a healthier smile!

When Should Your Child Visit An Orthodontist?

According to the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, every child should have a check-up by an orthodontist around the age of 7 years old. At this stage, they should have a good mix of both their permanent and baby teeth. One of our orthodontists will be able to assess their development and advise if orthodontic treatment will be needed in the future and if early intervention would be beneficial to avoid more complex treatment down the road. However, just how children hit their growth spurts at different times, their oral development can vary as well. We suggest bringing your child into our office as soon as possible if you notice any of the following:

  • They have difficulty biting/chewing food
  • They often bite their cheek and/or lip when chewing
  • Their teeth look crowded or misaligned
  • Their jaws look disproportionate
  • They lost their baby teeth too early or late
  • They have difficulty speaking

What Are The Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Treatment?

The main purpose of early orthodontic treatment is to intervene and prevent any oral problems before they become a larger issue. Early orthodontic treatment is often less invasive than if the patient were to wait until they were older. Early treatment has the capability to sometimes completely eliminate the need for treatment later in life. If it’s determined that your child needs orthodontic intervention, Drs. Singer and Shapiro can help guide the growth of the jaw and eruption of incoming permanent teeth.
