Enjoy Your Favourite Summer Treats With Braces!

If you have just begun your orthodontics journey and are worried about the kind of treats to enjoy this summer, you are not alone. Many people undergoing orthodontic treatment wonder what they can enjoy and what they can’t. Our team at Taunton Orthodontics is here to help you identify what to eat and what to avoid for successful braces and Invisalign treatment. So, as you continue with this beautiful journey to a healthier smile, follow these tips on how you can enjoy your favourite summer treats this season!

Eat Soft, Healthy Foods

If you just got fitted with braces, opt for soft snacks. Luckily there are still plenty of soft treats you can enjoy this summer! Orthodontic treatment carries loads of benefits, but it will require you to make some adjustments. We recommend these healthy summer snacks as they won’t cause damage to the brackets of your braces, thus reducing the risk of complications during treatment:

  • Frozen yogurt
  • Fruit Popsicles
  • Berry smoothies
  • Cheese
  • Watermelon

Avoid Hard, Chewy, Sticky, And Crunchy Foods

While you are undergoing treatment, the Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that you try to avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, and chewy foods. Particles from hard foods can get easily stuck between your teeth, Invisalign, or braces. Hard/crunchy foods also require force while chewing, which could also damage your braces or Invisalign. Chewy and sticky food such as toffee, hard candies, fudges, and caramels have higher sugar concentration and can cause gum disease, cavities, and loosen or damage your braces. We recommend avoiding adding these foods to your summer diet:

  • Whole apples
  • Nuts
  • Popcorn
  • Chips
  • Celery

Practice Proper Oral Hygiene

During the course of your treatment, you will need to maintain high standards of oral hygiene for the sake of your teeth and braces. Poor oral hygiene routine can damage, stain, or break your braces and increases the risk of developing cavities.

Brushing teeth regularly, at least twice a day, using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, and flossing daily cleans your braces well and will save you an expensive trip to your orthodontist later on. It’s also important to drink water after every meal to clean your braces this summer!
