25 Feb Play it Safe: When Wearing Braces!
When it comes to your smile, its important to play it safe! Sports activities can open up the risk for injuries, especially mouth injuries! When you add braces into the mix, the risks can be even higher!
At Taunton Orthodontics, we place a high importance on protecting your smile when you play. We highly recommend the use of mouth guards for our patients of any age. It is particularly important for mouth guards to be used during contact sports such as football, rugby, basketball, soccer and hockey, (even if you wear a cage)! According to the American Dental Association, one-third of all dental injuries are sports related. It is estimated that more than 200,000 oral injuries can be prevented each year if athletes use mouth guards!
A mouth guard helps to cushion the impact to the face that can result in an injury to the mouth. The mouth guard acts as a shock absorber and protects the teeth and lower jaw from the blow. It also helps to prevent accidentally biting into your lips, cheeks or tongue during activities. Even the professional athletes wear them. We’ve even spotted them on a few Toronto Raptors players! So next time you are about to hit the court or the field, make sure to play it safe with a mouth guard!
If you have questions about mouth guard usage with braces or Invisalign in Whitby, Brooklin or Oshawa, contact us at Taunton Orthodontics.
