Common Bite Problems

Everybody wants a healthy and beautiful smile. We do our best by brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly, but some of us are born with a malocclusion or a “bad bite”.

Teeth that are crowded or misaligned can cause many problems. They are harder to clean, and this can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Even with proper care, a straight set of teeth have the propensity to move into misalignment. This can happen in children from thumb sucking. With adults, misalignment can happen as we start to age and our jawbones weaken.

Bite Problems Can Be Treated At Any Age!

Malocclusion is treatable at any age. According to the Canadian Association of Orthodontics, “of the thousands of Canadians now in orthodontic treatment, more than one of every four is over 21.”

The good news is, almost all forms of malocclusion are treatable. Here are some common bite problems orthodontics can remedy:

Crowding

Crowding happens when the jaw doesn’t have the space to hold all of your teeth. Teeth can start to buckle forwards and at an angle, overlapping other teeth. Common treatments for this include braces or Invisalign.

Excessive Spacing

This is the exact opposite of crowding. This can be caused by having small teeth or from the loss of a tooth. Teeth with too much space are prone to move becoming crooked. Braces or retainers are a common treatment for this type of malocclusion.

Overbite

When your top front teeth extend and cover your lower front teeth, you have an overbite. In extreme cases the lower front teeth may be coming into contact with the gums behind the upper front teeth. This can damage the gums causing them to recede possibly leading to gum disease and tooth decay. Dr. Emily Singer and Dr. David Shapiro can help with a personalized treatment plan to fix this bite problem.
