What to Do In An Orthodontic Emergency

It is normal to experience some minor discomfort during your orthodontic treatment, especially after a new appliance is inserted or your braces or Invisalign are adjusted.

Most orthodontic issues (poking wires, lost or broken appliances, or minor discomfort) can be assessed by one of our team members at Taunton Orthodontics on the next business day. In the interim, our team will review some at home relief measures to help minimize discomfort until you can be seen.

If you think you are experiencing a true emergency (which is very rare), here are some helpful tips!

The first step is to evaluate if you are experiencing a true emergency that requires immediate attention.

True orthodontic emergencies can include the following:

1) Infected gums or mouth
2) Serious trauma or injury to your mouth or teeth
3) Unmanageable pain in your mouth or teeth

If any of the above situations arise, The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (https://cao-aco.org) recommends to seek help as soon as possible. Please contact our office right away to speak to one of our team members or to access our emergency contact information on our office answering machine if the office is closed.

At home relief measures for minor discomfort or broken appliances can be found in the following helpful resources:

Canadian Association of Orthodontists
American Association of Orthodontists.
